Fish inspired art

We recently got our first family pet.  Our boys picked out a Siamese Fighting Fish (Veil Tail Betta fish) from the pet store about one month ago, and since then we've all learned a lot about caring for this type of fish.
It is not a boring pet, as I imagined it might be before we got it, rather interactive, for a fish, I guess.
The kids enjoy feeding it and watching it swim and jump up to get its food.  It also watches us quite a bit when we're near to the tank.  Actually, as I type, it is watching me from the closest corner of its tank.
watching me...
But don't worry, I'm not changing this blog into an aquarium enthusiast's site; I'm just sharing some background on my latest artistic inspiration... though fish posts may occasionally pop up again in the future, depending on what else inspires me.

Here is a quick pencil sketch I completed some weeks ago:

Here's a larger one, showing more detail:

I also used crayons (whatever I find laying around I can draw with):

Today, I finished a quick acrylic painting:

You may (or may not) be wondering what is the vine-looking thing on the side of the tank in the picture?  I drew on some cling wrap with permanent markers and stuck it on for some decor outside the tank, since I also learned that Betta fish fins are quite delicate, and plastic plants inside the tank sometimes cause fin damage when the fish swims by too closely.  Fun fact.
